  • Clinton Township Council- 3 Year Seat- Republican- Non incumbent

    by Walter O'Brien on May 25th, 2010 | Comment

John is a product of Clinton Township. He grew up on the periphery of Annandale village, and attended Clinton Township Schools and North Hunterdon High School. He played sports in Community Athletics programs, served as an altar boy at Immaculate Conception Church, and defended the net as a goalie for North lacrosse.

    website: www.lazarus4council.com

    Professional Experience:

John works as s a research assistant to Rutgers Economists James Hughes and Joseph Seneca, studying economic and demographic trends in New Jersey. He has also worked as an aide in the legislature and as an adjunct Professor at Lehigh University.

    Education:

John believes public officials must continuously educate themselves and develop their practical skills. He has earned the following degrees:

BA- 2000- History/Political Science- Rutgers University

MA- 2004- Political Science- Lehigh University

MPP- 2007- Public Policy- Rutgers Bloustein School of Planning & Public Policy

MPA- 2010- Public Administration- Rutgers-Newark School of Public Affairs & Administration

    Volunteer Experience:

The Mayor appointed John to the Annandale Citizens Advisory Committee last year. Since then, he has researched many of the key issues facing the historic village.

John believes that Annandale is the beating heart of Clinton Township. It has the underlying characteristics of a walkable, pedestrian-friendly community, but it is under siege by a relentless flow of nearly 10,000 cars per weekday. The village needs traffic calming measures, and its sidewalks and intersections need improvement as well. John is committed to reinvigorating Annandale, and will vigorously lobby state and regional agencies for grant funding and attention. John successfully lobbied NJ Transit to improve the Township’s commuter services. Annandale station had been neglected for decades, despite being the most dilapidated and heavily-used station in the County. Last December, NJ Transit’s Executive Director finally committed in writing to making necessary improvements. John also got the attention of planners at the North Jersey Transportation Planning Authority, who scheduled a Walkable Community Workshop in Annandale this summer. Professionals will work with local residents and officials to document safety issues in order to inform future grant applications.

    PLATFORM:

CONTROL TAXES- Our state aid has been slashed and other non-tax revenues are down as well. We must control property taxes by finding creative ways to improve our services and generate new revenues. I prefer concrete ideas over empty platitudes.

MEASURE GOVERNMENT PERFORMANCE- We need to streamline our government by adopting private sector management techniques. We will increase the efficiency, effectiveness and quality of our services by developing performance measures for every department. This will produce better sources of information for fiscal and managerial decisions. We will also increase accountability and transparency by reporting our performance to the community.

DIVERSIFY OUR REVENUES- As the largest municipality in the region, we are well-positioned to sell many services- police, building inspection, court, etc.- to our neighboring communities. These towns have been reluctant to buy for fear of lost control, but they also face difficult fiscal pressures. If we can demonstrate that our services are high-performing, they are easier to sell. This can generate new revenues to offset reliance on taxes.

PROMOTE E-GOVERNMENT- We must develop our website so that it has richer content provided in a user-friendly manner. Many communities are moving services online, and we should do so as well. If you need to get information or conduct a transaction with our government, you should be able to do so quickly and easily online.

IMPROVE ANNANDALE- Annandale Village is the source of Clinton Township’s history and identity. In the modern era, the village retains its historic character, but quality of life is eroded by factors such as the relentless flow of traffic and dilapidated infrastructure. The Township must vigorously pursue grant funding to improve Annandale Village.

  • The Community is Invited for Free Coffee and Great Conversation

    by Walter O'Brien on May 24th, 2010 | Comment

Hunterdon County’s first-ever Community Conversation forum on issues affecting people with developmental disabilities will be held TODAY, May 24, at the Baker’s Treat Café and Pastry Shop, 42 State Route 12, in Flemington.

The public is invited to the free forum, to be held from 2 to 4 p.m.
The conversation, comprising elected officials, people with disabilities and advocates, is designed to bring state and local lawmakers together with local residents with developmental disabilities to create a stronger dialogue and to discuss new opportunities for full inclusion in all of New Jersey’s communities.
The goal is to advance the goals of people with developmental disabilities through a candid dialogue that is designed to ultimately lead to realistic solutions.
Issues that will be discussed include: perceptions about disabilities in Hunterdon County, concern over recent budget cuts to programs for persons with disabilities and the needs of families supporting persons with disabilities.
The forum is based on the World Café model, which fosters a candid conversation in a relaxed setting. Participants will sip coffee while they chat with lawmakers about important issues affecting people with disabilities throughout the state. Coffee will be served free of charge and light refreshments will be available for purchase.
The program is part of the Just Say Something campaign (www.justsaysomething.org), provided through the New Jersey Council on Developmental Disabilities.

  • Mark Berry for Readington Township Committee

by Loren Fisher on May 23rd, 2010 | Comment

I have chosen Readington Township for my place of residence for the last 26 years and appreciate the opportunities that the rural country setting of agriculture, horse and other livestock farms could provide for my family. My desire to serve on the township committee is to keep Readington a great place to live, raise a family and enjoy all of the wonderful aspects of Hunterdon County. I will bring the vast knowledge and experience I have gained from the 9 years of community service as a member of the Readington Township School Board.

As a community we do have challenges to face and I believe we need to face them together in an open and transparent manner. I have four principles that will guide me as a representative for all the people that live in this wonderful community:

Improve the Fiscal Management of the Township Government

    - The municipal taxes in Readington have gone up 23% in the last 3 years.

    - The deficit has grown from $9.7M in 1995 to $70.6M today which will cost the taxpayers $2.5M in debt service just this year.

    - In these challenging economic times Readington Township must live within its existing budget. This year the township budget is going up by 3.6% when we have citizens in our community having a difficult time meeting their financial obligations.

Protect our Environment and Preserve Readington’s Rural Way of Life

    - We need to implement an objective and transparent process with clear criteria for land preservation and the sale of township property.

    - We need to hold public hearings on land that is designated for preservation so both the benefit and the financial impact is understood by the community.

    Ensure Transparent and Effective Government

    - Assure that the public has an opportunity to make comments at a convenient time that allows committee consideration BEFORE action is taken.

    - All meetings should be broadcast on community access television so that everyone in the community has the opportunity to understand the issues and actions being taken by the committee.

    - All financial records should be maintained in good order and available for review in an easily understood format.

Build Community with a Government that Treats all its Citizens with Respect

    - Treat all residents of the community with respect when they appear before the township committee.

    - The residents are the taxpayers that support the government, pay the salaries and should be given the respect they are due.

    - With complete openness and more respect for the citizens, we can build greater respect for our local government and a stronger community.

The governance of Readington, by the Township Committee, has been far from transparent with access to information limited to a closely aligned group of individuals. The time for a fresh perspective is long overdue. It is my intention not just to bring the fresh perspective, but to assure that all information regarding the governance of the township that can be made available to the community is made available to the community. We all share an interest in Readington’s future and we all should have an opportunity to understand the decisions that are being made and share our opinions.

From the April 8th edition of the Hunterdon County Democrat “Simon said she favors the direction the current Township Committee has steered for Readington.”

Do we want more of the same? I know we can do better. We can be much more transparent and do a much better job managing the taxpayer’s money. We can continue to preserve the wonderful rural nature of our community and build greater respect for our government by expecting the government to have greater respect for the citizens.

Is this really the same Mark Berry from the Board of Ed running for Township Committee on a platform of Transparency, Respect and Fiscal Responsibility? Too funny!

Mark Berry? Who as president of the Board of Ed. demanded tax increases and threatened taking away courtesy busing from children? (You can’t make this stuff up!)

Mark Berry?, who as president of the Board of Ed. stopped having the Board of Ed meetings taped for the public?

Who is well known for chastising members of the public when they dared to ask a pointed question?

Who soaked the taxpayers for several million dollars for a school bus repair shop project that he hid from the public?

Mark Berry?, who had the Board of Ed purchase land near his home that to this day sits vacant?

He who was Board Presided while our costs per student went from 11 thousand to 13 thousand in 4 years while test scores and rankings went down?

      That Mark Berry? LOLOLOLOLOL!

I am 49, married, 2 children and a true fiscal conservative Republican, seeking public office in Council in Clinton Twp. I believe in Less Government, Less Taxes and a more efficient government starting at the local level. I am an ex-officer of the Special Forces Green Berets. I believe in time limits for politicians and I have no political agenda. Just want to give back to community and do the right thing here. Please honor me by voting for Harmen VOS on Tuesday June 8, 2010.
