Birding trip to Sandy Hook

Join chief park naturalist Tom Sheppard for a birding adventure to Sandy Hook, a 2044 acre barrier beach peninsula with salt marshes and a maritime holly forest, beginning 6 a.m., until 5:30 p.m., on Nov. 15, for adults only. We will search a variety of coastal habitats from sand dunes, grasslands, salt and freshwater marshes, and the maritime forest for birding opportunities. Once we leave Sandy Hook we will head south and check various ponds and beach locations along the Monmouth County coastline. Possible sightings include Northern Gannet, Red-throated Loons and waterfowl species.

A fun evening of sensory “awareness games”

Join park naturalist Laura Kroon at the Echo Hill Environmental Center, 42 Lilac Drive, Flemington, for  a fun evening of sensory awareness games, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., on Thursday, Nov. 19.

For thousands of years people from all over the world have used games to sharpen their senses and practice skills important for survival. Most people no longer need to hunt to find food, however the same games that ancient hunters played to hone their powers of observation can help you to see animals up close.

Jersey Idol Competition to Benefit St. Hubert’s

Auditions will be held Sunday, September 27 from 9-5 at Starmaker Flemington,
240 Route 31/202, Flemington, NJ.  There is a $20 registration fee, payable at the door – all proceeds benefit St. Huberts Animal Welfare Center.
 
Finalists from the audtions will be called back to perform in front of judges and a live audience and the winners will be selected on the spot.  Finals will be held at noon on Saturday, October 3 at The Crossroads in Garwood (78 North Avenue, Garwood, New Jersey, 07027).    Finalists enter free, audience tickets are $10 each  inadvance, $15 at the door and benefit St. Hubert’s Animal Welfare Center.

Paraplegic feline has reason to celebrate

Tashi celebrates his first birthday.

A paraplegic feline at a cat sanctuary here is taking baby steps in improving his ability to move around on his own.

Tashi was unable to walk or control his bladder when he arrived in November at Tabby’s Place, a cat sanctuary in the Ringoes section of the township, but thanks to physical therapy and a lot of attention, he spent his recent first birthday romping with fellow feline residents.

“We’re celebrating his birthday all month long,” Tabby’s Place Developmental Director Angela Townsend said.
