Mendez-Mendez, 20, a resident of Hunter Hills Apartments, faces charges of aggravated assault, possession of a deadly weapon, and knowingly possessing a weapon in connection with Monday's stabbing of Marlin Eduardo Juarez-Soto at the Flemington Arms Apartments on North Main Street, according to Dan Hurley, chief of detectives for the Hunterdon County Prosecutor's Office. "It appears that this was the result of some kind of argument amongst the suspect and defendant over a financial debt," Hurley said. "We believe the dispute started inside but the actual stabbing may have occurred outside." The investigation by the Prosecutor's Office Major Crimes Unit and the Flemington Borough Police Department continues, authorities said. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has placed a detainer on Mendez-Mendez pending further investigation, Hurley said, raising the possibility of deportation for the suspect. Juarez-Soto is in good condition at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick after undergoing surgery there Monday, according to a hospital spokesman.
